5 Things to do in NYC During the Holiday Season

New York City is such a magical place during the holiday season. The twinkle of lights everywhere, the brisk air rushing you into cafes for hot cocoa, the rustling of last-minute shopping bags - there's no escaping the energy of the holidays when you're here. Once the tree at Roc Center is lit, the holiday game is on.
Seeing the tree and ice skating are a given when you're in NYC from November to January 1st. But what about the not-so-obvious? Below are some of my recommendations for what to do in NYC during the holiday season, from a local:
- Go see a show: okay, I lied. This one is pretty obvious, but has to be done (outside of the Radio City Christmas show). My family's tradition is to see an Alvin Ailey show but there are lots of options. This season, I'm really looking forward to Slave Play and Tina.
- Cozy Up at a tiny Restaurant: There are so many restaurants in New York City, with whatever you fancy at the moment. Comfort food spots (one of my favorite restaurants in NYC is Sauce in LES, the other is Melba's in Harlem) give you the warmth of home and the feeling of family.
- Do some community service: There are so many people in NYC that need love and help, but during the holidays the chance to volunteer is very high. You can visit New York Cares for all of the opportunities available on any given day.
- Hit a Speakeasy: ...or really, any intimate bar. NYC has a number of speakeasies with lots of corners to cuddle up into, here are some recommendations. If you're uptown in Harlem, there's also 67 Orange street, Gin Fizz, under bar, The Honey Well, and Room 623. There's also a new spot I stumbled into over the summer, Sugar Monk.
- Go to the movies: but like, really go to the movies. NYC has some very interesting theaters like Roxy Cinema (where you can catch dinner at Roxy Oyster bar after), Nitehawk in Brooklyn with two locations, Syndicated, Metrograph and it's cinephile-centric series and showings, and indies at Angelika. These ain't your AMC Tuesday matinees.
