This month has been a whirlwind of trips – I’m currently in between Miami and Savannah and had a ball in New Orleans for Essence Festival. Old No 77 Hotel and Chandlery in New Orleans, courtesy of my partnership with Hotel Tonight, was the best start to the month! Now the question for Savannah is “what to pack”?

When I show my luggage on Instagram, and how small thereof, I often get questions about what to pack for a 3 day weekend. I am very efficient because I don’t really believe in checking bags, so I have some tricks for getting everything squared away. 1. Only pack one of everything. I only like to pack one pair of jeans that I can wear both day and night (usually a pair of dark wash), one pair of nice shoes and one pair of comfortable shoes. Throw in a nice top for if you go out for a nice dinner. A quick getaway isn’t the time for lots of options; honestly the trip will be over before you have time to fuss with outfit changes!
2. Don’t pack your bulky things. Keep the sequin kimono, the fuzzy blanket, and your Balenciaga dad kicks at home (unless, yenno, the occasion calls for it). If you are going on a winter weekend getaway, pack the least amount of sweaters and boots as possible. Again, only one of everything if you can! For sweaters in particular, I recommend wearing it while you travel to save room in your luggage.
3. Wear the same outfit when you travel. This tip is mostly for quick flights, but I always wear the same outfit arriving and departing. My go-to uniform is a comfortable tee and jeans or leggings, and a pair of shoes you can slip on and off (these are also shoes that you can wear to the beach and in the shower if you’d like). It makes it easier to get through TSA check and to slide off during the flight if you need to; I have a finicky ankle so I always have to take my shoes off and put on compression socks.
4. Keep accessories and makeup minimal. I usually only bring one one pair of studs, one pair of hoops, a few bangles, a ring or two, and one pair of sunglasses. Most of which I actually just wear to the airport. I also only bring one light lip for daytime and one dark lip for night. I either travel with a gold eyeshadow pot or a small palette, foundation, mascara, and blush. That’s it. Both accessories and makeup should be able to fit in one pouch.
5. Don’t forget your chargers! I have a ziploc bag with an iPhone charger, an android charger, and a portable charger in it that I just throw into my suitcases. I recommend keeping one of these baggies around for when you travel, it saves a ton of time searching before you leave. It also saves lots of space in your bag that is usually taken up by tangled cords that you threw in last minute.
The more I travel, the more I’m starting to believe in investing in my luggage. For so long, I would just pick the cheapest bag and go. Now I’m looking for integrity and pieces that will stand the test of being thrown in and out of car trunks and luggage carousels. I picked up this deep green Coach duffel bag before New Orleans and now I can’t imagine traveling without it. It’s real leather, it’s durable, and it’s malleable enough to fit under a seat on the plane.
