Breaking All of the Style Rules

I am constantly challenging the idea of what a plus size body “should” be wearing. At my job, the running joke has become “Is that piece shapeless and black? Minimalist? Kelly will love it!”. For years, online and print media (fashion bloggers included, I’m guilty) have force fed these “style rules” that plus-size women need to belt everything to define their waists and give themselves shape and you must wear all black to appear smaller, etc. etc.

Y’all, f*ck that. Wear what you want. I’ve embraced oversized silhouettes in different textures and cuts and my closet has become a sea of black, but far from boring.

I love finding brands that work for me. Universal Standard has become my go-to for interesting wardrobe staples. My oversized coat is my “Olsen Twin moment”, especially when I throw on a pair of oversized shades. The Geneva Dress is my go-to for the weekdays, and I add an obi belt and heels for the weekend. Plus-Size-Minimalism-Universal-Standard-SweaterHow are you challenging your style? • Kelly Augustine

      ahh, thank you!! <3

  • Your fashion and mantra is on point. I wear what I want. It makes me happy. This is my style all day long. I’m into the minimalist monochrome look. Especially for work. That’s why I fell so hard for universal standard. Quick question I want the sweater to go with the dress I have by them. Is it true to size also?

    • Kelly Augustine

yeah girl, do what you want! I actually ordered a M in this top and I should have stayed true to a S. It’s def true to size 🙂

  • I love everything about this! The looks are so good, and serious, F those archaic “rules”!
